5 things to see and do in Bridgend County, Wales

The region offers some fantastic mountain biking trails

Just two and a half hours from London, Bridgend County offers great surfing, award-winning beaches, dramatic landscapes and peak-to-beach cycling.

It’s as much a draw for savvy holidaymakers as it is for television and film crews, with shows like Doctor Who and Torchwood scouting out captivating locations.

The extensive coast and Victorian promenade of Porthcawl are easy to reach, yet Bridgend County still remains a bit of a secret.

Here are five of the best things to see and do in Bridgend County:

Surf some of the best breaks in Britain

It may not be as well known as New Quay or Gower, but Bridgend County has some of the hottest surf breaks in the country, so much so that South African pro surfer Ingemar Cressey recently opened Cressey’s Surf Academy here.

Porthcawl Surf School and Adventures Wales also offer surf lessons throughout the year, while events and festivals extend the surf vibe into the county’s bustling towns.

We recently sent Jack Palfrey to Porthcawl to find out more.

While chilly winter days get most people dreaming about an escape somewhere hot, for adrenaline junkies in the UK the darker nights and lower temperatures only mean one thing; snow!

The Scottish Cairngorms are the only place to head after the first covering of snow. While the Cairngorms provide stunning walking scenery throughout the year, it’s during the winter that the mountain range truly comes alive and is the best time to visit.

Skiers who make the trip north certainly won’t be disappointed when they arrive as the mountain range boasts 11 ski lifts and more than 30km of pistes. So, whether you spend a few days or even a week in the Cairngorms, you definitely will not be bored! Snowboarders are also well-catered for in Scotland with a fully maintained snowboard park available throughout the ski season from December to April every year. For those of you braving the snow for the first time, learning in Scotland with English tuition is a great way to build confidence and nail the basic skills. If you visit in mid January make the most of the celebrations for World Snow

Saving for that dream trip

Saving for that dream trip

It’s deep midwinter, the fire is flickering, and in the flames you can see your future: a beach in Bali, whales breaching off Alaska, the Namib Desert by moonlight.

It may be a comforting vision when darkness falls at 4pm each day. But first you have to get there.

It’s sensible to start putting away a regular amount out of your income each month. Set up a standing order when your salary lands and you’ll hardly notice the money has gone. Research your trip thoroughly, and use the plethora of travel websites to plan your route. It costs a lot less to book all your flights ahead, and if possible, your accommodation too, even if you may fancy wandering free as a bird.

Budget for each leg of the trip carefully. If you have paid as much ahead as you possibly can, you can then give yourself a daily budget and predict much more accurately what that spend will be.

There are online calculators to help you plan your costs for each country plus the connecting flights, such as this one on www.savingfortravel.com. Have some fun researching online – these tips from The Guardian don’t only apply to

Treat yourself this Christmas with a winter holiday

Treat yourself this Christmas with a winter holiday

It’s that time of the year when the atmosphere’s getting a little frosty – and that’s just the feeling around the kitchen table. So the greatest gift you can give this Christmas to your loved ones is a positive frame of mind. What’s the best way of achieving that Zen-like state? Treat yourself to a chilled out summer holiday in winter and come back before the big festive day relaxed and ready to take on anything – even your miserable mother-in-law.

You don’t have to break the bank to go away in winter, either. In fact, there are so many cheap holidays on offer at the moment, you can spend a week on the exotic island of Cyprus and still have money left over. Added bonus: the souvenirs from your beach holiday make for awesome Christmas presents.

Holidays to Cyprus can be the gift you give to yourself. This time of year the sea temperature is an average of 18 degrees – not too hot and not too cold. Ultimate swimming temperature.

With an average winter temperature of 19 degrees, it’s still warm enough for you to spend time in the villages in only a vest top,

Nature at its most awe-inspiring

Nature at its most awe-inspiring

Cruise holidays offer many experiences that are unique and often life-affirming – sailing past the Statue of Liberty in New York as dawn breaks or watching dolphins surfing the bow wave are just two. Sailing into a Norwegian fjord on glassy water, with mountains and ancient glaciers in the distance has to be another one of those experiences.

Fjord cruises are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s easy to see why. The view from the water is unparalleled – you simply can’t fathom their sheer magnitude and scale from land, and you can often access places that would take hours to reach by land. By cruising, you’re also able to see natural wonders from a different angle – what other form of travel allows you to sail past a glacier whilst sipping champagne, or witness a waterfall tumble into the water below from the comfort of your balcony?

Wherever you go in Fjordland, you’re likely to see stunning scenery, but there are a couple of spots that are guaranteed to leave you awestruck.

First is the mighty Sognefjord – the world’s longest navigable fjord. At its head, you’ll find Skjolden with its UNESCO World Heritage Urnes Stave Church

In Pragelato, Club Med is reinterpreting the traditional cosy chalet atmosphere with a contemporary twist. With its cluster of chalets huddled around a central building and linked together via a network of pathways, the Resort offers the perfect accommodation for families, couples or groups of friends. Plus, with a cable car departing from the centre of the Resort, ski enthusiasts have direct access to the ski slopes of Vialattea and Pragelato, as well as the Olympic runs at Sestrières, in just four minutes. The resort is recently refurbished to include two new restaurants, a bar and a heated underground passage to take guests directly from the ski rooms to the cable car.

Club Med Pragelato is the gateway to more than 400km of slopes across six resorts. The skiing is suitable for all levels and, with ski, cross-country ski and snowboard lessons

However, there is so much more to this wonderfully diverse group of islands than just the idyllic beaches; each one has their own wealth of hidden treasures to uncover.

You’ll find an incredible array of architectural styles, cultures and cuisines thanks to the influences from British, French, Dutch and Spanish settlers. Additionally, there are many historic harbours, bustling markets, colourful towns and lush tropical forests just waiting to be explored too.

The locals will also help to make your experience truly unforgettable; their easy-going attitude and laid-back lifestyle is infectious. They will

Your holiday starts at the airport

Your holiday starts at the airport

Does your pre-holiday headache start the minute you get the suitcases down from the top of the wardrobe?

From the frustration when the zip won’t close on your bulging suitcase to losing the directions to your airport car park, it can all feel a bit of an endurance test. But I always seem to arrive on the plane with seconds to spare, after a sprint through departures with a toddler under each arm, others seem completely serene. They’ve got plenty of time to relax and enjoy all the airport has to offer. So what’s their secret? I’ve been doing some research and here’s what I found:

Pack like a pro

Wouldn’t it be lovely to arrive at your destination with all your clothes well organised and wrinkle-free? It doesn’t have to be some crazy pipe dream. Here’s how to do it: roll knitted items and put these on the bottom, leaving a space at the wheel end for shoes. Then lay all your non-knitted clothes flat on top of the rolled layer, putting what you want to wear on the first day on the top. Then put pyjamas and toiletries on top of that. Fill zip-lock bags

Shopping in New York

Shopping in New York

If you are a bona fide shopaholic, then there are plenty of opportunities across the world to indulge your habit, particularly if your first love is fashion. From Tokyo and Hong Kong to the traditional European couture capitals of London, Paris and Milan, there’s a wide world of styles out there.

But for many, New York is at the top of the list for retail enthusiasts.  As the backdrop to innumerable films and TV shows, New York is instantly recognisable – even to those who have never set foot on the main island of Manhattan.

Barneys, Bergdorf and Bloomingdales The ‘3 Bs’ form the bedrock of swanky New York shopping. Anyone who has enjoyed the fashionista excesses of Carrie Bradshaw and the Sex and the City girls will feel right at home in Barneys, Bergdorf and Bloomingdales – though remember that they also cater for men and children.

Barneys is revered as the headquarters of the über-luxurious shopping experience, and is a temple for fashion-obsessed New Yorkers – it’s very much a shop for the girl who knows her Christian Louboutins from her Manolo Blahniks.

Bergdorf Goodman is another shop for the luxury-obsessed. Located on the expensive Fifth
